Season 1: Episode 8
Frida Kahlo for Kids: A Plus-Plus Speed Build of The Frame (Time Well Played, Episode 8)
Some art is meant to be admired from behind a velvet rope. Other art is meant to be built, piece by tiny piece, at the kitchen table. In Episode 8 of Time Well Played, the weekly Plus-Plus USA show about the moments worth making, we turned one of the most famous self-portraits in the world into a colorful Plus-Plus speed build. No talking, just music, busy hands, and bite-size fun facts about Frida Kahlo and her painting The Frame. If you are looking for a screen-smart way to introduce kids to art history (or a calming creative project for yourself), this one is worth every minute.
Who Was Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist best known for her bold, colorful self-portraits. Her paintings are full of personal symbols, bright flowers, animals, and details inspired by Mexican folk art and culture. Today she is one of the most recognized artists in the world, and her work is a favorite in art classrooms because it is so vivid, so personal, and so easy for kids to connect with. Frida painted herself again and again, and her art invites a big question that every kid can answer: what would a picture of you include?
All About The Frame
The Frame is the painting that inspired this week's speed build. Here are a few fun facts to share with your kids while you build:
- It is a self-portrait. Frida Kahlo painted The Frame in 1938, showing herself with flowers in her hair against a bright blue background.
- It is painted on metal. Instead of canvas, Frida painted her portrait on a small sheet of aluminum.
- The frame is part of the art. The flowers and birds surrounding her face are painted on glass. Frida bought the decorated glass frame at a market in Oaxaca, Mexico, where it was made by Mexican artisans for a mirror, photo, or religious image.
- It made history. In 1939, the Louvre in Paris purchased The Frame. It was the first work by a 20th-century Mexican artist bought by a major international museum.
- You can still see it today. The Frame now hangs at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Watch the Speed Build
In this episode, our builders bring The Frame to life using the Plus-Plus Inspired Frida Kahlo tube. The palette is pulled straight from the painting: Neon Blue for that iconic background, Fuchsia and Red for the flowers, Mustard and Camel for warm accents, and Black and White to make every detail pop. You will see flat mosaic builds come together pixel by pixel, plus colorful 3D pieces that lift the flowers right off the table.
Speed build videos are oddly satisfying to watch, and they are also a great way to spark ideas. Pause on any build, pick your favorite part, and try it yourself.
About the Plus-Plus Inspired Series
The Plus-Plus Inspired series combines open-ended building with art appreciation. Each tube is based on a famous work of art, with a color palette that reflects the original and an educational insert about the artist. The Inspired Frida Kahlo tube includes 350 pieces in seven colors and is recommended for ages 7 and up, which makes it a great fit for big kids, art-loving teens, and grown-ups who want a creative, hands-on hobby.
Use the pieces to recreate The Frame as a mosaic, build 3D flowers and birds, or create something completely your own. For even more ideas, download the free Plus-Plus app.
Try It at Home: Build Your Own Frida-Inspired Self-Portrait
Frida painted herself surrounded by the things she loved. Here is how to turn that idea into a family art project:
- Look at a picture of The Frame together and talk about what you notice. What colors stand out? What is in the border?
- Ask each person to pick three things that represent them, like a favorite animal, flower, food, or hobby.
- Build a simple face mosaic with Plus-Plus, then build your three favorite things as a colorful border around it.
- Share your finished portraits and explain why you chose each piece of your frame.
It is part art history lesson, part self-expression, and all screen-smart fun. It also makes a great rainy-day boredom buster.

One of our team members is a proud Clemson University graduate and an all-time Tigers fan, so their answer is football games. Turns out our building crew loves a good game day, too.
