Build Anything But That: A Plus-Plus Creativity Challenge (Time Well Played, Episode 6)

Your kid has built the sea turtle from their Plus-Plus tube. Then they built it again. And again. Sound familiar? In Episode 6 of Time Well Played, the weekly Plus-Plus USA show about the moments worth making, Kate and Ryan tackled that exact problem with a game we are officially obsessed with: Anything But That. The rules are simple. One person grabs a finished build off our display wall, and the other person has to build anything except that. A gnome becomes a dancing merman. A sea turtle becomes a zombie. And a pile of leftover pieces becomes the most stylish ear cuff you have ever seen. If you are looking for an easy creative challenge for kids, or a fresh way to get more play out of the pieces you already own, this one is for you.

How to Play Anything But That

Here is how the challenge works at the Build Table. Kate walks over to the wall of builds behind us, picks one, and hands it to Ryan. Ryan's job is to build anything but that. Then they switch. So if someone hands you a unicorn, you can build absolutely anything in the world, as long as it is not a unicorn.

It sounds silly, and it is, in the best way. Saying "anything but" takes away the easy answer and pushes your brain somewhere new. Kids who usually follow instructions step by step suddenly have to invent. Kids who freeze at a blank table suddenly have a starting point. That is the sweet spot of open-ended play.

Round One: A Gnome Turns Into a Merman (Who Turns Into Michael Jackson)

Kate kicked things off by handing Ryan a gnome. Instead of a gnome, Ryan started building a person, then a merman, and then things took a turn. Because he was down to just one white piece, his merman ended up with a single white glove, and suddenly he was a Michael Jackson merman, complete with a dance-ready kick. Nobody planned it. The pieces did.

That is one of our favorite things about this game. You start with one idea, run out of a color, and your build becomes something even better than what you pictured.

Round One, Part Two: A Sea Turtle Turns Into a Zombie

Then it was Kate's turn. Ryan handed her a sea turtle, and Kate decided to let the pieces guide her. After some careful hair color decisions, she revealed a little zombie, plus a brain to go with it. The zombie has one arm (intentionally) and one shoe (also intentionally, because it felt more appropriate). Ryan's theory? The merman and the zombie may have gotten into a scuffle.

Round Two: Anything But a Robot Hero

For round two, Kate handed Ryan a build that looked like a mashup of every action hero and transforming robot you can think of, all rolled into one. The most obvious move would have been a superhero, so Ryan steered clear of that and got creative.

From there, the table filled up fast:

  • A tiny zombie sailboat. Because even zombies need a vacation.
  • A mini fire truck. Small, simple, and seriously cute.
  • A pineapple. With a little extra added on top to finish it off.
  • A Mondrian-inspired build. Using the leftover pieces, Kate went full art museum with a bold, blocky, abstract look.
  • An ear cuff. Ryan made the kind of thing you can always make when you have about 12 pieces lying around, and then he wore it. So stylish.

Why the Anything But That Challenge Works for Kids

As parents, we spend a lot of time looking for activities that keep kids engaged without a screen. This challenge checks every box:

  • It reuses what you already have. No new set required. Every finished build in your house becomes a brand new prompt.
  • It builds creative confidence. There is no wrong answer, as long as it is not the thing in front of you.
  • It encourages problem solving. Running low on a color? Ryan's white glove proves that limits can lead to the best ideas.
  • It supports fine motor skills. Every click of a Plus-Plus piece builds dexterity and focus.
  • It is fun for the whole family. Parents, siblings, and grandparents can all play, and the reveals are half the fun.

Try It at Home: Give Your Tube a Second Life

Ryan wrapped up the Build Table with a challenge for families at home. Do you have a Plus-Plus tube, and has your kiddo built the sea turtle (or the unicorn, or the dinosaur) several times already? Take it apart and build anything but that. Here is how to set it up:

  • Line up a few finished builds from around the house, or pull up a favorite from your kid's collection.
  • Take turns choosing a build and handing it to another player.
  • The other player has to build anything except that, using the same pieces or whatever is on hand.
  • Add a timer for extra excitement, or keep it relaxed and let the story unfold.
  • Finish with a big reveal and let everyone explain what they made and why.

One shape, endless creativity, guaranteed. That is the whole idea behind Plus-Plus, and this game proves it every single round.

Quick Break: The Hobby You Would Never Expect

Every episode of Time Well Played includes a Quick Break, a short, unscripted question for the Plus-Plus team. This week's question: what is a hobby or interest people might not expect from you?

The answer from Jasmine on our marketing team? Model trains. Big time. Jasmine has a large model train layout at home, loves trainspotting, and even used to run a YouTube channel all about trains. It is a hobby that a lot of people quietly love, and one that often gets overlooked. Honestly, it makes perfect sense. Model trains and Plus-Plus have a lot in common: patience, imagination, tiny details, and the joy of building a whole world with your own hands.

Plus-Plus Pals: A Field Trip to School

This week, Plus-Plus Pals took the show on the road with a trip to a school. The segment is a mini vlog of the visit, set to music, so you can come along for the day and see Plus-Plus in the hands of the students. Visits like this are one of our favorite reminders of why we do what we do: give kids a pile of pieces and some room to imagine, and they will surprise you every time.

The Plus-Plus Promise: One Shape, Endless Creativity

Every Plus-Plus product starts with an idea on a page and a few hundred tries to get the build just right. We design with your time in mind, because when that box of pieces lands in your hands, we want whatever gets built next to be worth every minute. That is a promise we make as a team. One shape, endless creativity. That is our guarantee.
