We Let AI Pick Our Builds: A Plus-Plus BIG Build Challenge (Time Well Played, Episode 5)

What happens when you hand the build list over to artificial intelligence? In Episode 5 of Time Well Played, the weekly Plus-Plus USA show about the moments worth making, Kate and Ryan sat down at Plus-Plus USA headquarters with a bin of Plus-Plus BIG pieces and let Claude, an AI assistant, call the shots. Round after round, the AI named a build and a color, and our hosts raced to make it happen. The result was a table full of suns, ladybugs, whales, fire trucks, and one very royal crown, all built from fewer than 100 pieces. If you are looking for a simple building challenge for kids, a fun toddler activity, or just a reminder that play does not have to be complicated, this episode is for you.

How the Plus-Plus Team Uses AI Behind the Scenes

We use AI at Plus-Plus every day, and we know a lot of folks have mixed feelings about it. For our team, it is a helpful tool for analyzing data and sparking product ideas, not a replacement for imagination.

Kate uses AI in two main ways. The first is color matching. When she is working on a build and has four colors picked out, she will ask AI which three colors would pair well with them, and it gives her fresh combinations to try. The second is app ideation. Kate shares the top-performing builds from the free Plus-Plus app and asks AI for 20 more ideas it thinks families will love. In other words, the builds you are vibing with help shape what comes next.

That got us thinking: what if AI picked the builds for a challenge, and we brought the creativity?

Why We Used Plus-Plus BIG for This Challenge

For this building challenge, we reached for Plus-Plus BIG. BIG pieces are the same iconic Plus-Plus shape, just two and a half times bigger, which makes every build easy to see on camera and easy for little hands to grab at home. Anything you can make with regular Plus-Plus, you can make with BIG. That makes BIG a natural fit for toddlers and preschoolers who are just starting to explore building, and for parents who want to sit down and build alongside them.

The bin was packed with color, including several shades of green, pastel blue, glitter purple, and plenty of red, yellow, and orange. When you are working with only a handful of pieces, color does a lot of the heavy lifting, and that became the secret to this whole challenge.

Round by Round: What AI Asked Us to Build

Round One: A Bright Yellow Sun and a Red Ladybug

Kate built a sunny yellow sun, rays and all, while Ryan made a red ladybug. Ryan's goal was to keep it as simple as possible, because one of the most fun things about Plus-Plus is how simple it can be. A few pieces and the right color are all it takes for a ladybug to come to life.

Round Two: A Goldfish and a Green Tree Frog

Next up, Kate built an orange goldfish, a build she had never tried before, while Ryan tackled a green frog. With apple green, neon green, basic green, lime green, and pastel green in the bin, Ryan went with a rainforest vibe and built a little tree frog. Ryan also shared a fun sneak peek: in 2027, Plus-Plus is releasing an item that brings all of these shades of green together in one set.

Round Three: A Pink Cupcake and a Blue Whale

Kate's next challenge was a pink cupcake, and neither host had built one before. It came out with a generous amount of frosting, which, if you ask us, is exactly how a cupcake should be. Ryan used pastel blue to build a sweet little whale with a flippy tail. Kate wants to know what you think of her cupcake, so be honest and let us know.

Round Four: A Purple Butterfly and a Yellow School Bus

Kate built a purple butterfly with glitter purple pieces in the middle, and yes, glitter purple is available in the BIG size. Ryan finished a yellow school bus in record time. It could have been bigger, but it did not need to be. Sometimes the simplest version of a build says everything.

Round Five: A Red Fire Truck and a Green Turtle

Kate built a red fire truck inspired by one of Ryan's earlier designs, complete with a ladder. There is a big fire truck build in the BIG section of the free Plus-Plus app, and Ryan has been building that section out with parents of toddlers in mind. Ryan built a pastel green turtle that looks like it is swimming right toward you.

The Five-Piece Challenge: Toddler-Friendly Builds

Then the AI turned up the difficulty: five pieces or less. This is the kind of building activity that works beautifully for toddlers, because it keeps things short, simple, and successful. When you only have five pieces, you have to lean on color to tell the story.

  • A five-piece star. Kate pulled off a clean, simple star in just five pieces.
  • A heart. Ryan found the heart a little tricky with only five pieces, so he used six. We build a lot of hearts around here, because there is so much love in this office.
  • A five-piece flower. Kate's flower turned out a little like her sun from round one, and it fits perfectly next to the butterfly.
  • An arrow. Ryan built a simple arrow that points straight to the fun.

The Grand Finale: A Crown Fit for Royalty

In the final round, Ryan built a crown, and it even fit on his head. Kate was quick to point out that Ryan is more of a tiara guy, and honestly, we did not know we were in the presence of royalty. It was the perfect way to wrap up a build challenge that was all about play, laughter, and imagination.

Simple Building Ideas for Kids You Can Try at Home

The biggest takeaway from this episode is that you do not need a complex design or a huge pile of pieces to make something great. Every creation on our table came from fewer than 100 pieces, and you can make all of the same builds with regular-size Plus-Plus too. Here is how to bring this challenge home:

  • Write simple build ideas on slips of paper, like a sun, a ladybug, a whale, or a star, and take turns drawing one.
  • Add a piece limit for an extra challenge. Five pieces or less is a great place to start with toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Let color do the work. A red circle with a few black dots is a ladybug. A yellow shape with rays is a sun. Kids quickly learn that color can tell a story.
  • Build side by side. Whether it is a parent and child or siblings, building together turns a simple activity into quality time.
  • Celebrate the silly ones. A cupcake with too much frosting is still a cupcake, and the laughter is part of the fun.

A simple building challenge like this supports fine motor skills, color recognition, problem solving, and creativity, all without a screen in sight. Use your imagination, use the colors you have, and you can make all kinds of fun creations.

Quick Break: Something People Would Not Expect About Working at Plus-Plus USA

Every episode of Time Well Played includes a Quick Break, a short, unscripted question for the Plus-Plus team. This week's question: what is something people would not expect about working here?

The first answer cleared up a common misconception. Many people assume Plus-Plus pieces are manufactured in our Greenville office, but Plus-Plus USA is actually the US importer and distributor of Plus-Plus products, which are made in Denmark. The second answer was all about the people. Our team is a tight-knit group where everyone supports each other. If something falls through the cracks or someone needs help understanding a problem, they can go to anyone on the team and it is always warmly received. That team atmosphere is a big part of what makes this place special.

We are always excited when you watch the show, but we are even more excited when you tag us on social media. This week, we loved a comment on one of our Facebook posts featuring a family playing with Plus-Plus. We love seeing what you are building and what you are playing with.
