How to Build a Baby Unicorn with Plus-Plus: A Magical Screen-Free Activity for Kids (Time Well Played, Episode 4)

Some weeks call for dinosaurs and eagles. This week called for a little magic. In Episode 4 of Time Well Played, the weekly Plus-Plus USA show about the moments worth making, we sat down at the Build Table to create a 28-piece baby unicorn, took a Quick Break with Lauren W., our Amazon Specialist, to find out whose job she would take for a day, and celebrated three creators who have been sharing Plus-Plus with their communities just in time for spooky season. If you are looking for a screen-free activity for kids that feels a little bit enchanted, this is the episode to build along with.

Why a Unicorn Build Is the Perfect Screen-Free Activity

Unicorns have a way of pulling kids into play. They are part fairytale, part rainbow, and entirely theirs to imagine. That makes a unicorn build a wonderful entry point for independent play, especially for kids who love stories and color. With Plus-Plus, every build starts from the same simple, interlocking piece, so children are not just following a picture. They are learning how shapes connect, practicing fine motor skills, and watching something magical come together one piece at a time.

For parents, that is the real gift. A focused, hands-on building activity gives kids a creative project they can dig into on their own, and it gives you a few quiet minutes back. That is what we mean by Time Well Played.

Meet the Baby Unicorn: 28 Pieces of Pure Magic

This baby unicorn is one of the builds featured in the free Plus-Plus app, and it also appears in our Fairytale Puzzle By Number Activity Pad. In fact, look closely and you will spot this very unicorn right on the cover. The build takes just 28 pieces, and every color used comes from our rainbow mix, which makes it easy to recreate at home with pieces you may already have in your collection.

Because it is a small build, the baby unicorn is a great fit for younger builders who are still getting comfortable with Plus-Plus, and it is quick enough to finish in one sitting. Older kids can use it as a starting point and then build a whole herd, each unicorn in a different color combination.

How the Unicorn Comes Together

The build starts with the body and works outward, which is a helpful habit for kids to learn with any Plus-Plus design. Once the base is in place, the flowing, colorful tail comes next, and this is usually the moment when kids start to see their unicorn take shape. From there, a few final pieces round out the head and mane.

And last but certainly not least comes the part that makes a unicorn a unicorn: the horn. Saving the horn for the very end turns the finish into a small celebration, and it is a fun moment to let your child place that final piece themselves.

A few tips for building along at home:

  • Sort your rainbow colors into small piles before you start so little hands can find the next piece quickly.
  • Let your child lead. If they want a purple tail instead of a rainbow one, that is not a mistake. That is imagination.
  • Once the unicorn is finished, invite a story. Where does this baby unicorn live? What is its name? Building is only the beginning of the play.

Where to Find the Unicorn Instructions

You can find this unicorn and many more builds in the free Plus-Plus app, available on the App Store and Google Play. Just search Plus-Plus and look for the blue icon. The app is a great resource for families who want fresh building ideas without buying a new set every time, and it keeps screen time purposeful: a quick look at the instructions, then screens down and hands on the pieces.

If your family prefers something tactile and travel-ready, the Fairytale Puzzle By Number Activity Pad includes numbered guides for fairytale builds in both 2D and 3D, including this unicorn, plus a storage box that keeps everything together for car rides, waiting rooms, and restaurant tables.

Quick Break with Lauren W.: Who Would You Switch Jobs With for a Day?

Every episode of Time Well Played includes a Quick Break, a short, unscripted question for someone on the Plus-Plus team. This week, we asked Lauren W., our Amazon Specialist: if you could switch jobs with anyone for a day, who would it be?

Lauren's answer was Shelley, our creative director. As she put it, Shelley has a fantastic creative eye, and her honest answer was a little bit of admiration and a little bit of jealousy. It is a fun peek behind the scenes at the people who help bring Plus-Plus builds, content, and campaigns to life.

Plus-Plus Pals: Boo Basket Ideas and Quality Time from Our Community

Plus-Plus Pals is the segment of the show where we show you what you show us. We asked our community to share their builds and their play with Plus-Plus and tag us at @plusplususa, and you delivered. This week, Jasmine gave a special shout-out to three creators who tagged us on TikTok.

Haley of The HB Edit: Plus-Plus in Boo Baskets

Haley, who shares content as @thehbedit, featured Plus-Plus as part of her boo baskets. If you have not heard of a boo basket yet, think of it as an Easter basket, but for Halloween. It is a fun way to celebrate spooky season with the kids in your life, and a screen-free building toy makes a thoughtful addition alongside the usual treats. Thank you, Haley, for shouting out Plus-Plus.

Danielle: More Boo Basket Inspiration

Danielle also included Plus-Plus in her boo basket ideas, which tells us this tradition is catching on in a big way. We love seeing Plus-Plus tucked in with the Halloween goodies. It is a gift that keeps kids building long after the candy is gone. Thank you, Danielle, for including us.

Ashley Landrum: Building Together

Ashley Landrum shared a video of herself building Plus-Plus with her son, and it captures exactly why we do what we do. The interaction and quality time between them is what play is all about. Thank you, Ashley, for showing Plus-Plus in action.

Boo Basket Ideas with Plus-Plus

Inspired by Haley and Danielle? Plus-Plus fits naturally into a boo basket because it is compact, colorful, and gives kids something to do after the trick-or-treating is over. A small tube or travel-friendly activity pad tucks easily into a basket, and seasonal builds from the free Plus-Plus app turn the gift into an evening activity. Pair it with a cozy pair of socks, a favorite snack, and a Halloween book for a boo basket that balances treats with time well played.

The Plus-Plus Promise: One Shape, Endless Creativity

One shape, endless creativity. That is our guarantee.
